Big Bets Capital is the investment and giving office of Tom Brown and Michelle Valentine. Our mission: to advance human flourishing and expand opportunity through an era of profound change.
We believe AI can bring extraordinary benefits: cures for disease, abundant energy, real opportunity for the next generation. How we navigate the coming years will determine whether those benefits arrive in our lifetime. That’s why we support the work this requires: rebuilding strategic domestic industry, leading in compute and energy, and helping children grow up well.
We’re a small team, and our giving is personal and pragmatic.
Founders
Tom Brown
Tom sets the macro vision, where the technology is going, and where our bets are thematically most needed.
He is a co-founder at Anthropic where he is in charge of compute strategy, overseeing the industrial and energy buildout that powers continued innovation in superintelligence. Previously, Tom led the engineering of GPT-3 at OpenAI.
Tom grew up in California and went to school in Massachusetts where he received a BSc and MSc from MIT. He enjoys spending his spare time with his growing family and paying it forward.
Michelle Valentine
Michelle leads the firm’s investing and grantmaking, collaborating directly with the founders, researchers, and policymakers behind each bet.
As an Australian who immigrated to the United States, she is a big believer in the American dream. She founded Anrok, a software company that helps businesses navigate state and local government requirements. Prior to founding Anrok and Big Bets, she was a venture capitalist and has been investing in AI for a decade.
In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, surfing, and good food.
